But don't let Sihanoukville's sedate, laidback atmosphere fool you. It can really come alive if you want it to and you'll find lots to see and do in Sihanoukville. Water sports (including scuba diving, snorkelling and kayaking), island hopping, trekking, boating, fishing are a few of the choices available for those looking for more action or adventurous Sihanoukville tours. What's more is that it is not very expensive to visit.

Located in southern Cambodia, on the Bay of Thailand, Sihanoukville is Cambodia's main port. Nicknamed Snooky, the city is named after King Norodom Sihanouk. It was founded in 1960 and immediately became a popular tourist centre. However, the Vietnam War and other conflicts stinted its development right up to the 1990s. In the last decade or so, though, it has really come alive, prompting the New York Times to call it "Asia's next trendsetting beach". It is attracting more and more visitors every year, where once only hardy backpackers made the trip.

Sihanoukville still needs a lot of work in terms of facilities and sprucing up, but for many, that is part of the charm of this picturesque beach destination. Many early visitors from around the world have found it hard to tear themselves away from Sihanoukville and have chosen to settle down here. Many of the Sihanoukville hotels, bars and other establishments are run by these expats, giving the place an international flavour, particularly when it comes to the cuisine. Sihanoukville restaurants are numerous and the food is diverse while being consistently delicious. The freshly caught seafood is especially good.
